New Delhi: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) collected water samples from 12 houses in Delhi’s Janakpuri area recently, after receiving complaints about contaminated water. CPCB checked out the water samples and the result unveiled that coliform bacteria was found in six houses and E. coli traced in two houses, which are unsafe for drinking.
However, no bacteria was traced in six samples, while in three a small amount of coliform was found, but not E. coli. But E. coli and coliform were present above the minimum limit in one sample, while another sample had both above safe levels.

The CPCB went on to taste seven samples from other houses in A1 Block of Janakpuri in June. All samples were analysed for bacteria like total coliform, fecal coliform, E. coli, and free chlorine. As per Indian standards (IS 10500:2012), drinking water should be free from coliform or E. coli in a 100 ml sample.
After receiving this result, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said to the National Green Tribunal that by mistake a dead pipeline had connected to an active one; this led to the contamination. DJB said it has taken all essential steps to address the issue. It tested 59 water samples from March to July, and only three were detected as unsafe to drink.
