Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has been giving priority to boosting horticulture in the state. As part of this effort, a plan is being made to create new orchards across 1,146 hectares to strengthen the horticulture sector. A total of Rs 15.35 crore is likely to be allocated to the Horticulture Department for the preparation of a special action plan. As per government instructions, field officers will visit different regions, assess farmers’ needs, and accept applications for support.
The government is set to provide new saplings, drip irrigation facilities, and adequate trading support to ensure farmers can sell their produce easily at reasonable prices. These initiatives will be implemented under the Horticulture Development Project.

A new horticulture policy is set to be unveiled soon, which includes several provisions to benefit fruit growers. Its announcement may be made in the upcoming state budget. The government has already fulfilled its promises to apple growers, such as introducing a special law for Universal Cartons to standardize packaging. Under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), the government has ensured that only quality apples are purchased to prevent financial losses. This year, Rs 45 crore is likely to be distributed to farmers under the MIS scheme.
Numerous orchard farmers want to replace their old trees with high-yielding varieties. This year, the department sold 2 lakh saplings of American and Italian plants and has set a higher target for the next financial year.
With financial aid from the government, now the Horticulture Department has the responsibility to implement the schemes effectively and transform the dream project into reality.
