Pune: Dust and air pollution have hovered over Pune city. Residents of the city are coping with poor air quality, leading to health problems for the people. Therefore, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been using five advanced fog cannon machines for cleaning road dust and to mitigate the poor air quality of the city. Such machines have been bought under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) with help from the 15th Finance Commission of the Central Government.

PMC headquarters conducted a live demonstration of the fog cannon on Thursday. Additional Municipal Commissioner of PMC, Prithviraj, said the machines are to be used especially on roads to remove dust and air pollution.

The fog cannon machines are expected to be used on some of the major roads of Pune, like Shivajinagar to Baner, Karve Road (from PMC headquarters to Warje), Satara Road (Swargate to Kondhwa via Katraj), Solapur Road (Swargate to Shewalewadi), Sangamwadi to Kesanand Phata via Yerwada, and Sinhagad Road (Dandekar Bridge to Dhayari Phata).

These machines have been put on trucks running on CNG, making them eco-friendly as well. Each truck has the capacity of a 6,000-liter water tank, a high-pressure pump, and 22 special nozzles. Water is being sprinkled on roads through nozzles so that dust particles like PM 10 and PM 2.5 settle down easily. These particles are detrimental to human health, affecting the lungs and heart severely.

PMC’s officials believe that the machine is expected to be very effective in controlling the city’s dust, which boosts air pollution. The cannon machines will make the city cleaner, greener, and safer for the residents of Pune.
