Patna: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha urged the central government to provide more support to the state in the horticulture sector, especially dry areas of South Bihar, which need a lot of funding. Speaking at the Kharif Abhiyan-2025 Agriculture Conference in New Delhi, Sinha said that if the horticulture production increases in Bihar, then farmers’ income will also go up, especially those who are facing hardship in rain-deficient regions.
He stressed that horticulture institutes should be established for the promotion of fruits that grow well in dry climates. Several fruits, such as amla, bael, jamun, plum, and phalsa, have a lot of potential in dry areas. These crops can change the complexion of horticulture in these semi-arid zones.

Sinha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for providing funds to support Bihar's agriculture sector. These initiatives will encourage young people to start commercial farming, especially in horticulture.

The Deputy CM also requested improvements to the National Makhana Research Centre in Darbhanga, including the appointment of a full-time director and more research facilities. He urged the central government to open an APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) office in Patna to boost agri-exports, including horticulture products.

Horticulture farmers need better access to markets so that they can get a fair price for their productivity. Besides this development of infrastructure like setting up cold storages and polyhouses, institutional support and modern techniques in the horticulture sector are essential for improving productivity as well as farmers' profits.
