Lucknow: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given a relaxation of two more weeks to Uttar Pradesh authorities to submit final reports about pollution in the Ganga River. A bench led by NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, along with Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, took this decision on May 2. As per the bench, the report failed to provide any important information.

It has not given the details about the drains that are discharging sewage into the Ganga or its tributaries. It also failed to mention whether these drains are tapped, where the sewage would be diverted, and which sewage treatment plants (STPs) would handle it. Besides this, the report lacked timelines for when each drain would be tapped and did not name the responsible officials.

Earlier, the state was told to give district-wise data to ensure that untreated sewage from untapped drains is not being released into the Ganga or its tributaries. However, the tribunal found the report submitted by the state’s environment secretary on April 30 to be incomplete.

The bench pointed out that data from districts like Sonbhadra, Mau, Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, and Prayagraj was incomplete.

The additional advocate general of UP requested to give two more weeks for gathering the missing information. The NGT agreed to give relaxation, and the next hearing is scheduled on May 29. The tribunal urged that the full transparency in the report will help to protect the Ganga River from pollution.
