Numerous gardening enthusiasts have created WhatsApp groups, from which they exchange all the necessary information regarding plants and their growth. Some have even started their own seed banks to distribute among fellow gardeners. Every season, members collect money at one place and procure plants from nurseries, especially Kadiyam.
Krishna Kumari, admin of one such WhatsApp group for terrace garden welfare, shared that Guntur now has rooftop gardens spread over an area equivalent to nearly one acre. This collective effort has inspired people from other regions to join in, according to Radh, another admin from the SETG group.
With the success of the group, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMT) is now becoming active and ready to launch a mobile app so that all gardeners can connect easily. The civic body has assured to distribute plants for free. Commissioner Srinivasulu stated that GMT plans to encourage rooftop gardening further through guidance and resources.
With this initiative, rooftop and kitchen gardening will be further boosted. This will help in spreading greenery in the city, which will make the environment better and keep the air quality fresh. The work of the gardening group is an example of urban farming and a role model for other cities.
