“Chauhan went on to say that Mizoram’s land and climate are favourable for the farming of horticulture crops. Some issues need to be addressed, such as deep valleys, and the traditional practice of 'jhum' farming makes large-scale cultivation difficult,” Chauhan said. He also added that the central government has been thinking about the welfare of Mizoram’s farmers, so various schemes have been made for the state.
During the event Governor of Mizoram, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Vijay Kumar Singh, who was present at the Raj Bhavan, said agriculture and its related sectors play a vital role in Mizoram’s economy. He noted that the forest area land of the state is perfect for horticultural development. Currently, 10 percent is being used for this purpose.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who attended the function in Thenzawl, highlighted the importance of the two institutions under the Central Agricultural University (CAU): the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry and the College of Horticulture. He said these institutions are valuable assets for Mizoram, providing quality education to students not just from the Northeast, but from across India.
With this initiative, Mizoram is expected to make rapid progress in the horticulture sector. The land of the state will be fully utilized, and farmers will get subsidies and knowledge of modern farming. This will increase farmers’ income and strengthen the economy of the state as well.
