The goal of the project is to overcome overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and huge traffic without hurting the cultural charm of the market. The renovation work will get underway after getting the green signal from the Horticulture Department.
As part of the modernization, a special “flower mall” will be built to house both wholesale and retail flower shops. Concrete roads and parking areas will be added to manage traffic better and help transport flowers more efficiently. The area will also get new lighting to make it look more attractive and safe, even during early mornings or late evenings.
Setting up a cold storage facility is the special feature of the upcoming project. This will help in preserving the unsold flowers, whereas farmers can store and sell them the next day, which will reduce wastage and save farmers from financial loss.
During the renovation period, some short-term issues will take place. KMC has already prepared a blueprint for how to deal with the situation during that period so that the market can run smoothly.
Rammohan Mullick started this iconic flower market, which has been serving the city for more than 130 years. It is a favourite place for traders, photographers, and tourists. It is expected that after the renovation, the Mullick Ghat flower market will spread more fragrance.
