Cornwall Nursery grabs gold again at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

London: A nursery from Cornwall emerged champion and bagged the gold medal again at the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show. Penzance-based Surreal Succulents earned this distinction for the fifth consecutive year for its remarkable display of lush green plants capable of surviving in dry and any tough conditions. The nursery’s boss, Daniel Michael, said he was "over the moon" with the win and praised his team for their hard work in growing, watering, building, and preparing the exhibit. The group also won the RHS Plant of the Year award back in 2022.

Michael said, “We were nervous when we arrived at Chelsea, but seeing the gold medal brought huge relief.” He shared that some of the succulents in their display took up to 15 years to grow and were tricky to transport from Cornwall to London. “Tall succulents are hard to pack. They can fall over in the van, especially when driving over speed bumps,” he explained. “We used soft ties to secure them without damaging the stems.”

“We used soft ties to secure them without damaging the stems, “he said. Michael added that their succulents are grown in tougher conditions. “In winter, we don’t give them much heat. We keep them cold and provide plenty of light to stop them from growing too tall.”

The silver-gilt medal went to Burncoose Nurseries, based in Gwennap, for their exhibition of dazzling plants and species that are available in Cornwall’s temperate rainforests. They always participate and have remained a special part of the Chelsea Flower Show for the last 41 years.
