Jaidevi: Himachal Pradesh’s Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Jaidevi, organized a special awareness workshop on the promotion of horticulture. The event took place on Monday and was led by Horticulture Development Officer Anupama Mehra. The goal of the workshop was to make students aware of the importance of modern horticulture practices, especially growing fruit plants. Fruit production boosts the income of farmers and the economy of the state as well.
Mehra explained the importance of mulching — a method that helps retain moisture in the soil and protects plants during the hot summer months. Students took part in a live demonstration, where they learned to mulch using grass and cow dung. She also introduced them to drip irrigation, an effective method to water plants in a controlled way.

Students took keen interest and promised to plant more and more trees. Himachal is known for the growth of fruits, especially apples, but in recent years the productivity of fruits has dipped due to saturation of orchards and climate change. Therefore, farmers have to face all the hardships.
This initiative will certainly increase awareness among the children, and they will further spread their knowledge to others, which will be fruitful for the horticulture sector. Farmers need modern techniques of farming and other facilities to address the challenges and boost their productivity.
