Nilgiris: Preparations are going on a war footing for the hosting of the first-ever Plantation Crop Show, to be organized by the horticulture department at Kattery Park near Coonoor in the Nilgiris. This vibrant three-day show will get underway on Friday and conclude on Sunday. This will be the last event of this year’s annual summer festival hosted by the Horticulture Department along with the Nilgiris district administration.

The crop show will highlight Tamil Nadu’s 10 most cultivated plantation crops—tea, coffee, coconut, areca nut, palmyra, oil palm, cocoa, cashew, betel vine, and rubber. Several creative designs are made from these crops and arranged beautifully to entice and educate visitors.

“We are also setting up stalls to explain the byproducts of these crops,” said an official from the horticulture department. “Tea, coffee, coconut, and cocoa are widely grown in the Nilgiris. Palmyra, being the state tree of Tamil Nadu, will also be specially featured to create awareness.”

Officials are hoping that massive numbers of tourists from all over the country are likely to visit the show. Apart from crop displays, horticulture officers from other districts have established many stalls for the promotion of local produce. The department will also organize a valedictory ceremony for the fruit show. Earlier, it was cancelled due to heavy rain.

The Horticulture Department of Nilgiris has successfully hosted several events this season, such as the 127th Flower Show, the 11th Spices Show, and the 18th Rose Show. The Plantation Crop Show is the last event, aiming to end the season on a high note with the promotion of the rich agricultural diversity of Tamil Nadu.
