The first cargo train is set to leave from Katra to Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus on June 3, 2025. This is considered a new chapter for Jammu and Kashmir’s horticulture sector. The train’s journey will be 30 hours, covering 2,000 km, which will help in reaching the delicate fruit to markets fresh.
Cherry growers are excited. Bashir Ahmad Bashir, president of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union, said, “Earlier we could only send four tons. Now, with rail cargo, we can send 24 tons and reduce transport costs to just Rs 8 per kilogram.”
Earlier, the produce was shipped by road and then by train from Jammu, often causing delays and losses. Now, the efficient cargo service promises better income for growers. Union Minister Jitendra Singh praised the initiative, calling it a key step in connecting Kashmir to national markets and strengthening the region’s economy.
This initiative has started a new episode in the valley’s horticulture sector. Farmers are hoping that the same thing will happen with the apple and other fruits. The train facility will help farmers to get a handsome price for their productivity, which will boost their income and strengthen the economy of Jammu and Kashmir.
