Accra: African nation Ghana has made rapid progress in its horticulture sector, strengthening the country's economy and reducing poverty, states Davies Narh Korboe, president of the Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE). Horticulture doesn’t mean to grow only fruits and vegetables; it can make rural lives better and support the nation’s overall development. It is essential to improve the infrastructure, innovative ideas, and strong policies for the success of this sector, he said.

Korboe made these comments in a statement to announce the Ghana Horticulture Expo, set for June 11 to 13, 2025. The event, under the theme “Innovate, Transform, Sustain: Driving Growth in Ghana’s Horticultural Sector,” will bring local and international experts together. They will explore how innovation, sustainability, and investment can help the sector grow and support national development.

Currently, Ghana is doing well in the horticulture sector, producing fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. Korboe said the industry plays a key role in food security, export growth, and job creation. “Horticulture can support Ghana’s 24-hour economy vision by creating jobs and improving lives at all times of the day,” he said. Kwaku Boateng, Vice President of Coconut Federation-Ghana, added that agriculture makes up 20% of Ghana’s economy. Horticulture is growing fast due to strong demand at home and abroad.

In recent years, Ghana has experienced substantial growth in the horticulture sector. The country earned $3.8 billion in 2023 through non-traditional exports, mostly from horticultural productivity. It is estimated that over 1.5 million Ghanaians are working in this sector, in which more than 50 percent are women. Horticulture has changed the complexion of this country, boosting the economy and people’s livelihoods.
