Panchkula: The Panchkula Municipal Corporation has given the green signal for the establishment of a horticultural waste disposal plant in Industrial Area Phase 1. This initiative is set to take the city towards cleaner and greener. Panchkula has been following in the footsteps of Chandigarh to recycle the waste material to save the city from air pollution.
This new plant will help manage the large amount of garden and horticulture waste that is currently thrown away and left unused across the city. The project, which will cost about Rs 2.43 crore, was approved in a recent Finance and Contract Committee meeting led by Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal.
The plant will be packed with modern equipment such as a briquette machine, hammer mill, flash dryer, and a pollution control system. It is capable of converting waste like dry leaves and branches into briquettes—compressed blocks that can be used as fuel. This method is eco-friendly as well as helpful a lot in reducing the need for dumping waste in landfills.
This kind of plant has been operating in Chandigarh since 2023, processing 30-40 tonnes of waste every day. The moment the operation of the plant gets underway in Panchkula, the civic body will start earning by selling briquettes to different industries, or they can also be used in cremation grounds. This venture is likely to be beneficial for the environment, providing some financial benefits to the civic body as well.
