Horticulture Dept. demonstrates plant propagation methods to farmers

Kathua: A one-day exposure visit for 25 farmers and fruit growers from the Billawar and Lohai Malhar blocks was organized by the Department of Horticulture, Kathua. This visit was held under the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) to transmit modern horticulture techniques to farmers. Chief Horticulture Officer (CHO) Ashwani Sharma flagged off the group, encouraging farmers to adopt the latest methods so that they can boost their yield and livelihoods.

 

The visit took place at the Centre of Excellence for Fruits at SKUAST-Jammu, Udheywalla, under the guidance of Director of Horticulture Jammu, C. L. Sharma. During an interactive session, farmers got a chance to learn how to do modern farming in horticulture from experts.

 

Dean of the Faculty of Horticulture and Forestry, Prof. Vikas Tandon, shared details about the advanced activities at the Centre, especially the cultivation of high-quality fruit plants. He informed the farmers that they could purchase these improved plants at reasonable prices.

 

Prof. Akash Sharma from the Division of Fruit Science provided insights on scientific orchard management. Sandeep Gupta, District Level Subject Matter Specialist (Pomology), educated the participants about the various government schemes like HADP, JKCIP, MIDH, and CAPEX, encouraging them to benefit from these initiatives.

 

In this daylong event, farmers got a chance to see live demonstrations of plant propagation techniques in hi-tech greenhouses. The initiative of the programme was to enhance farmers’ practical skills and transmit the basic knowledge of horticulture as well, which will be helpful in increasing their productivity and incomes as well.
