Kangra: Kiwi is now gradually gaining popularity in India due to its medicinal values. Currently, Indian farmers are taking a lot of interest in farming kiwi, especially in the hilly regions. The rich nutritional value, juicy taste, and growing demand in the market have made this fruit more popular. It works well for fever, dengue, and other diseases. Now, kiwi farming has been proving a boon for farmers.
The ideal condition for the cultivation of kiwi is that it should be 800 to 1500 meters above sea level; a cool climate is suitable for this fruit. States like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and parts of Darjeeling have ideal conditions to grow kiwi easily. The fruit needs deep, well-drained loamy soil with a pH between 5.0 and 6.1. Farmers are advised to test their soil and use compost or lime to adjust pH levels.
Unlike trees, kiwi grows on vines and needs strong support like trellises. Vines should be spaced properly to allow sunlight and air. Watering is important, especially in the early stages. Drip irrigation is best in hilly areas, helping to save water and prevent disease.
Currently, India imports kiwi from New Zealand, Chile, and Iran. Farmers living in hilly areas have an opportunity to start cultivation of kiwi. But proper care was required, and then it became a rewarding source of income for the hill farmers.
This opens a great opportunity for local farmers. With proper care and modern methods, kiwi farming can become a big source of income for hilly farmers. The demand for kiwi always remains high; people often purchase and consume it so that they can remain healthy for a long period of time.
