Ranchi: Papaya is an extensively used fruit in India, and it is grown in all parts of the country, known for high productivity and medicinal values. Tropical and subtropical regions are the ideal place for papaya farming, where the climate remains warm and humid. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand are the leading papaya-growing states.

The growth rate of this fruit is high, and it needs low maintenance. Therefore, it is now a favourite fruit among farmers looking to fetch money in quick time. However, the plant is sensitive, and excess cold and rainfall may damage the crop.

The fruit grows well in several soils, but results come in well-drained sandy loam. Usually papaya is being planted by farmers during the monsoon, autumn, or spring. Numerous varieties, such as Pusa Delicious, Pusa Dwarf, Pusa Giant, and Taiwan Red Lady, are commonly cultivated in the country. The plant bears fruit within 8 to 10 months after planting. The yellowish-green colour of the fruit is the indication of the ripening of the fruit and readiness for picking.
