New Delhi: The central government has been gearing up to revive Aravalli across four states. A total of Rs16,053 crore is to be spent on this project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, is gearing up to launch the center’s ambitious Aravalli Green Wall project. The goal of the project is to curb deforestation and desertification and transform the barren land of four states— Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat—into a green belt. This was stated by Environment Ministry sources on Tuesday.
The main event will take place in the capital, Delhi, where Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will join PM Modi for a tree plantation drive in the ridge area of the national capital. Meanwhile, the CMs of Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat will plant trees in their respective states to mark World Environment Day.
The land restoration effort got underway in 2023; now the Environment Ministry has prepared a new action plan. As per the strategy, it is expected that a new 5 km wide green buffer along the 700 km long Aravalli mountain range is to be created, covering around 6.45 million hectares of land. Officials say the project will help India reach key climate goals, including creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. India has also pledged to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030.
Currently, the range is in danger due to massive deforestation, mining, a real estate boom, and unorganized farming. The Aravalli Green Wall Project is expected to be a major step to overcoming the damage. It would be a landmark for the betterment of the Indian environment and greenery drive.
