New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday revealed some key action plans to curb the air pollution in 2025. A massive expansion plan is in the pipeline, such as the installation of anti-smog guns now becoming compulsory on high buildings like malls and hotels, the expansion of electric buses, the restriction on pollution vehicles, the deployment of 1000 water sprinklers, and so on.

The new rule will be imposed in Delhi from November 1, when only BS-VI vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs), and CNG-run vehicles will be given permission to run on Delhi roads. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed at all entry points and petrol pumps so that traffic movement can be monitored easily. These cameras will help catch and block end-of-life vehicles because they are responsible for spreading air pollution.

Delhi is under the grip of air pollution, with PM2.5 levels often crossing safe limits. The Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed over 400 in several locations on November 17, 2024. The city experienced only 121 ‘clear air’ days last year, while in 2023 it was 152.

To mitigate air pollution, the Delhi government inked an agreement with IIT Kanpur to conduct cloud seeding. This trial is likely to provide relief to Delhiites from toxic air, which is the demand of the time, especially during the winter months. The forthcoming plan is a strong push to make the national capital’s air cleaner and healthier in the future.
