They went on to say that most of their product is perishable, and it needs to be sold out every day; otherwise, it will turn useless. “Vegetables start to spoil within hours of being harvested. If the market is closed, then we will face big losses,” said Wazir. He further added that crores of rupees are wasted every year amid such closure.
He requested the government to keep the Narwal Mandi open in the summer and protect the livelihoods of the farmers. “This mandi is the main link in the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables in the region. Any break in operations harms not just farmers but also consumers and the local economy,” he said.
Wazir asked the Director of Horticulture Planning and Marketing, J&K UT, to do something positive and take immediate action and give full assurance that mandi will not be closed during the summer. He highlighted that farmers’ incomes and the consumers’ needs should be given the priority, not the convenience of trader groups.
There should be a permanent solution to stop closure of mandi in the future. Narwal Mandi plays a key role for the farmers and consumers alike. Its closure will make life difficult for both.
