
Globe amaranth is known by different names as per the region, such as "Vadamalai Poo" in Tamil and "Bataasha Phool" or "Makhamali Phool" in Hindi and other regional languages. It is known as Makhmali (meaning velvet in Hindi) because of its soft texture and remarkable appearance. The demand for the plant increases during festivals like Diwali and Tihar (in Nepal), where it is used in garlands and decorations to symbolize immortality, love, and prosperity.
Full sun and moist soil are suited to this plant. After its establishment, it can grow even in dry conditions as well. It grows each year, so gardeners have to replant it every year. It doesn’t only look pretty but is often used for the treatment of different diseases like dysentery, high blood pressure, oliguria, and heat-related conditions. Globe amaranth is being used in teas and dishes.
