Nagpur: India occupies third position behind China and Brazil in citrus fruit production across the world. Despite the huge production of citrus in India, most of them are consumed domestically. Therefore, only a small portion is exported. India is packed with different varieties of oranges, but the maximum demand is for Nagpur mandarins. It is replete with strong export potential, especially to neighbouring Bangladesh.

Citrus stands as the third most important fruit crop in the country after mango and banana. Its cultivation takes place in numerous states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, and parts of the North East.

India exported over 73,000 metric tonnes of fresh and dried oranges in the 2023-24 fiscal year and witnessed a 23% rise in shipments in comparison to the previous year. The market value of orange exports touched about US$19.23 million. Bangladesh, Nepal, the UAE, and Bhutan are the key importers of Indian citrus fruits.

Despite being a leading producer, the export share is low. As per the experts, it is essential to improve fruit quality and boost market access, and research is also required so that fruit can meet the international level. Support from government institutions like ICAR is essential for the improvement of quality and making it a high-quality product for global export.
