Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has pushed a floral waste recycling drive led by women’s self-help groups (SHGs). Women working in the organisation will turn flower waste into daily use products such as gulkand, agarbatti, dhoopbatti, attar, natural dyes, and room fresheners. The aim behind this project is to decrease floral waste from local markets, and this initiative will create job opportunities for local women as well.

NMC additional commissioner Vaishnavi B on Tuesday visited the busy Netaji flower market in Sitabuldi to know the quantity of flower waste that takes place every day. She discussed the matter with flower vendors and stressed the importance of turning waste into a source of income. She further added that “This project will manage waste along with providing dignity, income, and independence to women.”

A training programme will be arranged for SHGs on how to make the waste into valuable products. The NMC is adamant about working with women’s groups to accelerate the project. The civic body will also see its environmental effect. Flower vendors appreciated the idea, saying that a lot of flowers are being wasted every day. Now this project is the perfect solution to floral waste.
