Lucknow: Scientists at ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Lucknow, have developed a new mango variety named ‘Awadh Abhaya.’ The new mango product is a cross between a disease-resistant mango of South India named Neelum and an American variety named Tommy Atkins known for firmness and shelf life.

Awadh Abhaya has a different taste, sweet and slightly tangy, with an attractive skin colour. Its weight is around 300 to 400 grams. It is firm in nature and less likely to fall before harvesting, making this brand of mango perfect for fresh eating and export.

Awadh Abhaya’s ripening time is later, so this variety does not compete with other mangoes in the market, and farmers earn better profits. It will bear fruit every year, not like many mango varieties that show alternate bearing. Each tree is capable of yielding 80 to 85 kilograms of fruit every season.

The shelf life of Awadh Abhaya is 12 to 15 days without refrigeration, much longer than other mangoes. This will reduce wastage and give farmers ’time to sell in the market or send them overseas.
