Kolkata: Pineapple cultivation takes place in most parts of the country, and it is an important activity for horticulture farmers. The major pineapple-producing states in the country are-- West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Kerala. Although West Bengal leads in pineapple yield. However, Kerala is famous for growing this juicy fruit with coconut and rubber, providing farmers extra profit.

'Kew' and 'Mauritius' are the two key varieties that are cultivated in India. July to September is the key pineapple-growing season, and it takes an18-24 month period from planting to harvest.

Pineapple flourishes in warm, humid climates and prefers sandy, loamy, and laterite soils. Pineapples are propagated through suckers, slips, crowns, and discs.

Currently, many planting systems are being applied, such as double-row planting with specific spacing. Despite the massive pineapple cultivation in India, production is still low in comparison to the world average.

Pineapple is a significant export potential fruit. Currently its export is limited to Nepal, Maldives, and the Middle East. Its cultivation brings prosperity among farmers, especially in that region where it's intercropped with other crops.
