Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture Minister Gabriel D Wangsu urged the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to give support for the rapid growth of the agriculture and horticulture sectors of the state. He said this while speaking during the 96th annual general meeting of the ICAR Society, which took place in New Delhi on Monday.

The minister tabled a 10-point proposal, highlighting that the climate of Arunachal Pradesh is perfect for several crops, including kiwi production. As per the official report, the overall contribution of the state is above 60% of the country’s kiwi yield.

Wangsu stressed the setting up of a Central Kiwi Research Institute as well as the establishment of a Multidisciplinary Organic Agriculture University in the state for the promotion of organic farming, region-specific research, and organic certification.

The minister also requested to make the ICAR Research Station at Basar in Leparada district into a full-fledged directorate to support mid-hill zone studies. He also talked about the sanction of 10 new Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) for newly created districts and funds for 8 already-approved KVKs.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired the meeting; he is also the president of the ICAR Society. On this occasion, Union Ministers Bhagirath Choudhary and Rajiv Ranjan Singh were also present.
