Shimla: To overcome the post-harvest losses, the Himachal Pradesh government recently launched a new scheme to establish solar-powered micro cold storage units all over the state. This initiative will help farmers to store up to 500 cartons of their products. They have to spend about 20 lakh for setting up this kind of cold storage. The state government is set to give a 50% subsidy, meaning 10 lakh rupees.

The important thing with this cold storage is that its units will run on solar energy with a 48-hour battery backup, and the battery will take only 6 hours for a full charge. This initiative will end the cold storage shortages in the state.

An agreement was recently signed between the state's Horticulture Department and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a central government unit. EESL will be responsible for the maintenance of cold storages for four years.

Horticulture Director Vinay Singh said the scheme is expected to boost farmers’ income, and the issue of food spoilage will also be reduced. It is a clean energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the India Cooling Action Plan.

Farmers need to apply with all essential documents, like ID proof and site details, to their nearest horticulture office. The goal of this project is to make Himachal Pradesh a sustainable and tech-driven horticulture state.
