Kolkata: Heavy showers in some parts of West Bengal have created havoc among people, especially for horticulture farmers; continuous rainfall has been damaging their standing crops. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Calcutta has predicted that more rain is expected to occur in the coming week due to a low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and nearby regions.

As per the weather experts, “Light to moderate rain will continue in most places with chances of heavy to very heavy showers at some locations over the next seven days.” This prediction has raised fear in the minds of farmers because downpour has already damaged massive crops. Heavy rainfall is expected in several districts like South 24-Parganas, East Burdwan, Hooghly, Bankura, and West Midnapore.

The state government has issued an advisory directing officials to guide farmers. They have been advised to make the drainage system smooth to avoid waterlogging in the fields.

Cauliflower and cabbage-growing farmers are on the receiving end. Saplings of these vegetables are likely to be damaged in this spell of heavy rain. As per an official, if water remains in the fields for a longer period, then things would be the worst possible. Quick drainage and protective sheds are being suggested to avert further loss of the crops.
