Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s air pollution remains at hazardous levels in spite of huge spending by the government. As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city’s tiny particles, PM10, stay 8 to 13 times more than the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) safe limit. PM10 levels stayed at 81 µg/m³ in 2024–25, which is higher than India’s own limit of 60 µg/m³.

The city was funded Rs 727.18 crore by the Central government to curb pollution. Under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), out of this amount, Rs 435.11 crore has already been spent. However, the officials claim that there is a small improvement compared to 2017-18. Experts claim that unauthorised construction, vehicle emissions, and poor waste management are the main reasons behind the rise of pollution.

NCAP has introduced several rules for reducing air pollution in the city, such as overcoming traffic jams, making public transport smooth, monitoring dust in quarry areas, shifting industries, and stopping garbage burning. Widening of roads and planting trees are also under consideration of NCAP.

Experts claim that poor coordination among departments is a big hurdle in the work progress. Consistent planning and monitoring of work is essential to overcome the pollution issue in the city; otherwise, huge spending and detailed plans on paper are not going to improve the situation.
