Ladakh: Ladakh’s first botanical garden is coming up in Shayok village, situated on the way to Galwan Valley. All efforts are being made to turn 10 hectares of barren community land into a lush green garden. The aim of the project is to plant different kinds of fruits, medicinal plants, and the exclusive vegetation of Ladakh. After its completion it would be the first botanical garden in the Union Territory.

The Leh Hill Council, through its Command Area Development department, has been providing all support to villagers with works like land cultivating and constructing a water reservoir. The council has already released Rs1 crore for the project. Area Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakze has provided funds for the installation of a solar-powered water pumping system.

The garden is likely to entice a huge number of visitors, enjoying different kinds of fruits such as apricots and apples; high-altitude trees and plants; and medicinal herbs, as well as different varieties of rocks found in Ladakh. The project is part of the “Go Green Go Organic” campaign led by Drikung Kyabsgon Chetsang Rinpoche. Work on the garden is going on a war footing, and it is expected to be completed by 2029, encouraging tourists to visit Ladakh.
