Kashmir: The nation is set to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15; prior to this the Department of Botany at Government Degree College Ganderbal organised a vibrant flower show to mark the nation’s independence. The event took place at the scenic Botanical Garden with the title “Fusion of Nature’s Colours and Nation’s Pride”.

Visitors are turning up in huge numbers to witness varieties of flowers and stalls featuring the famed Japanese arts of Oshibana and Ikebana, cut flowers, dried flower arrangements, floral accessories, herbariums, floral resin art, and floaters. The bonsai display has attracted the people’s eyes. A 35-year-old ornamental pomegranate and a 20-year-old pagoda tree are the major attractions of the show.

Prof. Irfana Amin Qureshi, Head of the Department, said the department has been providing training to students to earn livelihoods through plant-based entrepreneurship. Senior faculty member Dr Shabana Aslam explained that the goal of the event is to make students aware of various career opportunities after getting a degree in botany.

Students highlighted their creative work by making bouquets, flags, and badges in tricolour from fresh flowers during the event. They also prepared charts where patriotic themes are written for Independence Day. The show has been getting a lot of appreciation from visitors for its combination of nature and national pride.
