Answering over the queries of council members that the state government is not giving full support to farmers through HOPCOMS. He respondent that the horticulture department has provided loans worth Rs 15 crore to farmers at an annual interest rate of 10.25 per cent.
MLC Govindaraju, a member of the Upper House, claimed that HOPCOMS had been neglected. He went on to say that districts like Kolar had been supplying vegetables and fruits to such outlets. While the minister claimed that 141 stores had shut, Govindaraju put the figure at 136 and suggested that mobile stalls need to be introduced so that farmers can sell their product easily.
Some members raised the issue of crop damage in Bagalkot, Vijayapura, and Tumakuru districts, ruining pomegranate, grape, and watermelon harvests. The state government announces Rs 9,500 per hectare as compensation for such huge losses.
