New Delhi: Climate change has been posing a serious threat for the horticulture sector, affecting crop production and quality and increasing pests and diseases. Rising temperatures and the nature of rainfall are changing. These are responsible for low production of horticulture crops. Therefore, farmers have to address all these issues on a regular basis.

Experts said that fluctuating temperatures and unbalanced rainfall, including droughts and floods, are affecting the production of fruits and vegetables along with flowers. The quality of fruit has been deteriorating; sizes are getting smaller, and ripening time and colour have also changed. Unexpected frost in winter is responsible for the dying of mango and citrus trees in some lower hill areas.

Fruit cracking while flowering and fruiting patterns are taking place due to weather change. Several strategies are being applied by farmers and scientists to overcome the climate change issue. Developing climate-resilient crops, using modern techniques such as greenhouses and hydroponics, and promoting sustainable water and soil management so that crops can be protected. Local knowledge and innovative methods are essential for better growth of crops. Adoption of such changes is the demand of the time to get quality and healthy fruits and vegetables.
