The goal of the conference was to create a compulsory deal to reduce plastic waste across the world. The matter is grave because more than 400 million tonnes of plastic are being produced each year worldwide, half of it for single-use items. Out of which 15 per cent is being recycled, but actual recycling is 9 per cent. Almost half of them are dumped, 17% are burnt, and 22% are mismanaged. These lead to increased pollution at a rapid speed and are very dangerous for humans, wildlife, and aquatics.
Currently, no agreement is in sight, so the future of the treaty is looking uncertain. It may be a serious issue which should be solved, but this year it seems to have ended without any result.
