Geneva: Around 180 nations have failed to come on one platform for the second consecutive time since October 2024 to agree on a legally binding treaty to stop excess use of plastic. The meeting took place in Geneva from August 5 to 14 to reach an agreement to overcome plastic pollution across the world. All the countries had different issues. The reduction of plastic production will block progress. Meanwhile, several countries, including the United States, India, several Arab nations, and China, do not agree to cut plastic production.

Experts say that the dearth of a voting system in the negotiations makes it difficult to reach an agreement. Inger Andersen, Executive Chairperson of the UN Environment Programme, said, “I am disappointed...but this is how multilateral treaties work. History shows it takes years of negotiations to create strong agreements. For the first time, countries have clearly stated their ‘red lines’, which can help us move forward.”

Several issues were raised during the talks, such as environmental and health problems due to the use of plastic with economic and political interests. It means the use of plastic will continue, and it would be a complex task to curb the plastic pollution across the world.
