Goa Horticulture Corporation to sell coconuts at Rs 40 each during Ganesh Chaturthi

Panaji: The Goa State Horticultural Corporation Limited (GSHCL) has decided to decrease the price of coconut ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi. The department has started selling coconuts at a subsidised rate of Rs 40 each since Friday. Overall, 25,000 coconuts will be available at 1,250 horticultural outlets all over the state.

The decision is taken due to the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi, when the demand for coconuts touches the sky. The department has procured around 15 tonnes of coconuts from Shivamogga in Karnataka so that supply could remain smooth. The supply will continue until the first week of September; the entire festive season will be covered, as per the official.

GSHCL chairman Premendra Shet said this decision will make Goans celebrate the festival without any hiccup regarding the price. Managing director Chandrahas Desai has made it clear that the corporation has ensured the supply of at least 25,000 coconuts every week until the conclusion of the festival.

Currently, coconuts are being sold for around Rs 37 and Rs 40 each in the open market; the price of large-sized ones is about Rs 60. Due to the increase of demand, the price will further hike. Therefore, GSHCL Rs has fixed the price at Rs 40, aiming to provide relief to consumers and make coconuts easily available during the festive season.
