Udhampur: Director of Horticulture Jammu, Gul Syed, on Wednesday visited Udhampur and chaired a meeting with Horticulture Development Officers and staff to assess the ongoing activities of the fieldwork of the officers in the district. Chief Horticulture Officer Brij Vallabh Gupta informed the Director about the works that are in progress under numerous schemes.

The Director asked all officers and field staff to visit on the spot on a regular basis and spread awareness among farmers about benefits available under schemes like JKCIP, MIDH, HADP and CAPEX. He also directed them to link horticulture works such as pit digging with MG-NREGA labour and to promote orchards of kiwi, dragon fruit and apple, which have good potential in Udhampur.

SC and ST farmers were encouraged to adopt horticulture activities with support under the ATMA scheme. The Director also emphasised organising training camps for farmers and staff and bringing school and college students to nurseries to find out employment opportunities in the horticulture sector.

The Director also visited the Fruit Preservation and Utilisation Extension Centre and instructed the MCC to start target-based works. He directed all HDOs to supply 1 to 1.5 quintals of fruit raw material to the canning centre for processing. He also went on to see the dragon fruit orchard of local farmer Yogeshwar Gupta.
