New Delhi: India is the major producer of ber fruit, producing more than 3.2 million metric tons in 2023-24. Several states like Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu are the significant contributors to the country’s total output. The rise in ber farming is associated with larger planting areas and the use of improved varieties. Banarsi Karaka and Kashmiri Red Apple Ber are popular varieties that are widely grown, giving high productivity and exceptional taste.

However, in recent years better farming methods have helped improve the quality of the fruit, making it more attractive in domestic as well as global markets. In recent years, the demand for ber has grown in overseas markets. Better quality standards and new processing technologies are providing a golden opportunity to Indian exporters.

Experts say that the acceleration of exports depends on two key factors—cultivation and post-harvest handling. Modern techniques of farming help in improving the quality of ber, while enzyme-assisted processing has been increasing the shelf life of this fruit and boosting its nutritional value. India is the leading producer and a competitive exporter of ber in international markets.
