New Delhi: The Horticulture Department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has completed the formalities and is ready to start its first school of gardening at the historic Roshanara Bagh in North Delhi. It is likely to begin its operation next month, officials said. Several new facilities have been established in the nursery section of the Mughal-era garden; a high-tech nursery has been developed; several other works, like furniture installation, are taking place; and some last-minute finishing touches are in the final stage, said a senior MCD official.

“From next month, we will begin training multi-task staff (MTS) who are assigned gardening duties. They will get the knowledge regarding plant care in different seasons, grafting, pruning, landscaping, and other techniques. This training will be provided by senior section officers and assistant horticulture directors,” the official said.

MCD has also established a 1.5-acre arboretum next to the school, featuring around 250 common plant species that are found in Delhi. Each plant is being tagged with its scientific name and other details. This botanical garden will serve as a resource centre for the upcoming gardening school. At present the New Delhi Municipal Council has been running the sole gardening school in Delhi at Purana Quila Road since 2011.
