New Delhi: Plastic plays a key role in our daily lives, causing serious issues for the blue planet. Each year about 460 million tonnes of plastic have been produced; nearly 353 million tonnes end as waste. Experts believe that this number is likely to triple by 2060; that would be a major environmental challenge.

To address this issue, representatives from more than 170 nations will take part in the upcoming conference in Geneva, Switzerland, from August 5 to 14, focusing on a global treaty to curb plastic pollution. 3.4% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions occur due to plastic. It is above the combined emission from aviation and shipping industries.

The ocean is on the receiving end. As per a recent study, about 27 million tonnes of tiny plastic particles, called microplastics, are floating in the upper layers of the North Atlantic Ocean. It has reached into soil, food, animals, and even the human body. Plastic pollution is responsible for climate change and the loss of animals and plants.

Scientists say plastic pollution adds to climate change and other kinds of pollution affecting flora and fauna. All the nations will have to come on one platform to overcome this issue. If the upcoming Geneva conference becomes successful, then it would be a vital step toward the protection of earth.
