Bengaluru: As per the Hindu tradition, the month of Shravan is considered sacred. Special prayers are being performed by the devotees. Fasts for various deities also take place during this time. The Kadamba flower holds special importance during this month because it is being offered to goddesses.
According to epics, the Kadamba tree is linked with Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is considered that Radha and Krishna had taken rest under its shade. The holy Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham has a Kadamba forest.
Local scholar Subrahmanya Sharma said that worship of the goddess with the Kadamba flower brings happiness, peace, wealth, prosperity and so on. It blooms during Shravan. Therefore, it is considered unique. But its leaves always remain green. Sharma went on to say that those who live near a Kadamba tree get protection from lightning and danger.
Ancient scholars like Adi Shankaracharya and Kalidasa had used Kadamba flowers in their worship. It is known by different names, such as Rudrakshamba, Vruttapushpam, Karna Poorna Pushpam, and Priya Pushpam. The tree is being used in Ayurveda for preparing medicines from its leaves, fruits, and bark.
