Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma wants to make Meghalaya a floriculture hub across the country. The government has unveiled the Floriculture Mission 1.0, with a total budget of Rs 240 crore over the next three years. This initiative is likely to make Meghalaya a floriculture hub in the Northeast and nationwide.

Speaking during his visit to Mawkriah village in East Khasi Hills, the CM said the mission will boost farmers’ income; the mission will support more than 3000 farmers, providing a subsidy of Rs 7 lakh each. There will be several benefits in it, such as training, infrastructure, and inputs. Around 500 farmers have got benefits under the scheme.

The main focus is to grow high-value flowers such as orchids (dendrobium, cymbidium, vanda, and phalaenopsis) and oriental lilium. The demand for such flowers is high in domestic and global markets, and Meghalaya's climate is ideal for the cultivation of such crops.

The state government has collaborated with Darjeeling Gardens and North Bengal Floritech for technical help, planting materials, and a three-year buyback agreement to ensure market access. The CM hopes that this investment is likely to generate Rs 600 crore in profits in the next couple of years.
