Chandigarh: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken a stern step to curb pollution in the Buddha Nullah. The NGT urged the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) and the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) to submit comprehensive reports about violations of rules by common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) in the city.

NGT came into action after getting numerous petitions filled by environmental activists and locals. They were annoyed by pollution caused by dyeing units. These units are responsible for discharging treated and untreated wastewater into the Nullah.

However, the PPCB has already imposed fines totalling over Rs 9 crore on different CETPs. This includes Rs 2.49 crore on a 50-MLD CETP, Rs 2.96 crore on a 40-MLD CETP, and Rs 4.5 crore on a 15-MLD CETP on Bahadur Ke Road. A bank guarantee of Rs 75 lakh was also taken from the 40-MLD unit. Authorities have started taking legal actions against violators.

The NGT has got the assurance from PPCB that IIT Ropar will prepare a long-term plan to mitigate pollution. The Punjab government has made a high-level committee to check all the future projects. But the NGT has raised several issues, such as the absence of members from the PPCB and the environment department, and unnecessarily involved the NGT’s name in the committee.
