Chittoor: Floriculture farmers of Chittoor district have been passing through tough times this year due to a sharp drop in floral production. The entire area is known for its cool climate and high yield for flowers like marigolds, chrysanthemums, jasmine, kanakambaram (firecrackers), and tuberose. Currently, farmers are struggling to meet the huge demand ahead of festive seasons.

Several festivals, such as Varalakshmi Vratham, Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Bathukamma, Dasara, Navaratri, Deepawali, and Ayyappa Mala Deeksha, are on the card; flower prices have increased by 40%–60% in early August. Kanakambaram was being sold at Rs 3,000 a kg on Friday at Kuppam market, but in open markets its price is double. Marigold sold for Rs 120 a kg in Kuppam and Rs 400 in another place; the price of jasmine is around Rs 800–Rs 1,000 locally, but outside the market it is double.

Despite high prices, many farmers had to throw away their produce due to a shortage of customers and a lack of cold storage facilities. Traders say orders from Tamil Nadu and Kerala have increased; this has reduced local supply.

Farmers say that low rainfall and excessive heat from March to June damaged crops. Things have been looking better since July; hoping for better produce from October.
