MPCB: Noise pollution exceeds during ‘Ganeshotsav’ in Pune

Pune: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has unveiled in its findings that noise pollution levels in Pune during Ganeshotsav 2025 remained high. This year, MPCB monitored noise levels at 200 Ganesh mandals across the city, and despite the restrictions by the state government, the report finds that the level of noise limits at all the monitored sites crossed the set limitations.

As per the MPCB, some locations recorded higher levels of sound pollution in comparison to the previous year. MPCB checked various destinations following directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had urged MPCB and Pune Police to keep the sound pollution under control during the festival.

Among the highest levels recorded was at a mandal on Jungli Maharaj Road, which measured 87.7 decibels on August 28. Another mandal in Sahakarnagar reached 93.4 decibels on September 1. However, at one mandal near Jungli Maharaj Chowk in Shivajinagar, sound levels dropped from 74.5 decibels on August 27 to 71.1 decibels on August 28.

Officials have confirmed that a comparative report on noise levels of 2024 and 2025 is to be submitted to the NGT. This report will help to make better policies during the festivals to keep the noise pollution and environmental norms under control in the future, MPCB said.
