Ahmedabad: Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to create two flower waste processing plants in Ahmedabad. This is a positive step towards keeping the city clean from sustainable waste management. The upcoming plants are expected to manage the daily floral and coconut waste collected from temples and other religious sites. Two plants will be set up in the eastern zone and western zone, respectively, costing Rs 2 crore in this project.
Each plant will cost Rs 62.5 lakh, and the total processing cost is expected to be Rs 1.8 crore. The project is supported under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Every day, nearly two tonnes of floral waste are collected from various city wards. To give this waste a new purpose, the AMC plans to recycle it into useful products like incense sticks (agarbatti) and coloured powder (gulal).

To carry out this plan, the AMC’s Health Committee has allotted two acres of land at Gyaspur to Omkar Enterprise for setting up one of the units. The land will be given at a nominal rent of Rs 1 per square meter. The project will provide job opportunities to locals as well.
One of the agencies has been selected for the construction and operation of both plants. The agency will see the maintenance and operations of the plants for two years. The agency’s performance will be assessed on a regular basis, and final decision of a contractual extension will take place on the basis of the performance.
