ICAR Dy DG explores PAU’s horticulture research segments

Ludhiana: Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticulture Science) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), along with senior officials of the department, visited Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on Friday to take stock of its progress in advanced research facilities in horticulture and agriculture. PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal was also present on the occasion.

They first visited at the Speed Breeding Facility in the School of Agricultural Biotechnology, where Dr. Parveen Chhuneja explained how the controlled-environment system helps accelerate crop breeding cycles. Dr. Singh appreciated the facility’s role in developing climate-resilient and nutritionally rich crops.

The team then visited PAU’s Potato Aeroponics Unit, a modern facility enhancing tuber research. Dr. Singh praised the university for using aeroponics to grow high-quality, disease-free seed potatoes, which can boost productivity and food security.

At the Vegetable Demonstration Farm, Dr. Tarsem Singh Dhillon showcased high-yielding vegetable varieties and modern production techniques. Dr. Singh acknowledged PAU’s significant contributions to vegetable breeding and emphasized the need to continue efforts in developing climate-smart and nutrient-rich crops.

At the end of the visit, Dr. Singh expressed full satisfaction with PAU’s dedication to horticultural and agricultural advancements. He assured that ICAR will leave no stone unturned in providing full support in strengthening research collaborations, technology transfer, and farmer-friendly policies.

PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal thanked the guests and confirmed that university will continue to boost research, innovation, along with improving farmers’ livelihoods.
