Kannauj: The Horticulture Department of Kannauj has decided to provide up to 50 percent subsidy to farmers so that they can grow their favourite flowers and vegetables at a low cost. Several facilities will be given to the farmers under the scheme, such as the establishment of poly greenhouses. The initiative will help them to grow vegetables in the off-season, making them financially stable. The Horticulture Mission is set to deliver financial support to farmers.

The cost for setting up a polyhouse of around 500 square meters is around Rs1, 060 per square meter. Therefore, the government is ready to give a subsidy of Rs 530 per square meter. There is an expense of around Rs 140 per square for the cultivation of capsicum and broccoli. It means the total cost for the setting up of a 500-square-meter polyhouse is about Rs 70,000, but farmers will have to spend only Rs 35,000 because half of the money will be paid by the government as a subsidy.

With this initiative, farmers have got a golden opportunity to grow high-value flowers and vegetables. Currently, most farmers in the district still depend on traditional crops. But the polyhouse scheme is a profitable venture for farmers with low investment and more profits.

The government scheme is set to help farmers to increase their income substantially. With the help of polyhouse farming, they can harvest vegetables and flowers of their liking throughout the year, providing better market prices and incomes.
