100 Million Trees will be Planted by 2030 Under Adani Group’s Plan

The largest and fastest-growing portfolio of diversified businesses in India, the Adani Group, has pledged to plant 100 million trees by 2030. This commitment was made on 1t.org, the World Economic Forum’s “Trillion Trees Platform.” The Adani Group’s pledge to plant 100 million trees by 2030 is the largest 1t.org pledge made so far in India and ranks among the most ambitious corporate pledges made worldwide. The 100 million would include both terrestrial trees and mangroves.

In support of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the multi-stakeholder platform 1t.org serves a global movement to preserve, restore, and grow one trillion trees by 2030. The corporate sector is specifically targeted for participation in this initiative. By removing a significant amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the larger trillion trees movement seeks to halt climate change and make much-needed progress toward the SDGs, biodiversity, and climate goals.

“It is simply inspiring to see 1t.org’s ambition to plant a trillion trees. According to Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, “it is a reflection of the resilience of humanity and what can be achieved through the collective power of like-minded people who are determined to fight for a cause.” In this context, I am pledging that the Adani Group will plant 100 million trees by 2030 as part of India’s declaration to take a leading position in its commitment at Paris COP 21 to create additional carbon sinks of 2.5-3.0 billion tons of CO2. Restoring ecosystems, reversing loss of biodiversity, and reducing soil erosion are all essential for building a greener world.

Growing trees is essential for a healthy planet and healthy people, and it is one of the best nature-based solutions for removing CO2 from the atmosphere. The fact that the Adani Group has already committed to conserving 29.52 million trees is plausible. Mangroves are the focus of a number of the Group’s projects because so many businesses are along the coast. By 2030, the Group intends to have 37.10 million mangrove trees. Both afforestation and conservation are included in this. Mangroves have numerous advantages, including the preservation of coastlines, the enhancement of marine biodiversity, the provision of local livelihoods, the prevention of the entry of saline water, the provision of a breeding ground for fish and other aquatic organisms, and many others. By 2030, the Group wants to plant 63.08 million trees in terrestrial plantations. These trees would help prevent soil erosion, reduce air pollution, provide thermal comfort, and recharge groundwater tables.

In this initiative, the Adani Group’s strategy is to plant native species that can survive in the local climate and enhance biodiversity while providing employment opportunities for local communities. The implementation makes use of cutting-edge technology for monitoring, seeding, and watering, as well as Sustainable Forest Management, which results in natural regeneration.
