Telangana Horticulture Department on a 3-day visit to Israel to learn modern farming techniques

New Delhi: Under the Indo-Israel Agriculture Project, government is promoting horticulture model of Israel in the states with the help of Israel’s agriculture techniques because Israel has the technology of dry land farming. In which more crops are produced by using less water and resources.

To study the growing of horticulture crops in Israel especially orchards with modern methods, a team of Horticulture department officials, scientists and functionaries of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University (SKLTSHU) and representatives of Rythu Bandhu Samithi (RBS) is on a three-day visit to Israel.

The team, led by M. Hanumantha Rao, director of horticulture, and B. Neeraja Prabhakar, vice-chancellor of SKLTSHU, are researching modern methods for producing the best yields of horticultural crops while using less land and water. The team will assist horticulture producers in the State in using the practices used in Israel to increase productivity.

As part of the visit, Dr. Prabhakar made a thorough inspection of the avocado plantations, particularly the grape plantations in southern Israel, as well as pomegranate plantations in northern Israel. She also inquired about the mechanization of various vegetables and horticulture crops and methods of cultivation in Israel. The V-C said we have collected experiences of farmers and scientific techniques followed by them in producing quality eggplant and lemon.

According to Ms. Neeraja Prabhakar, Israel cultivates vegetables under greenhouses as part of protected cultivation, which is ideal for the world in terms of quality and productivity. Implementing Israeli style model in the state would be beneficial for the horticulture farming. The state government has already given huge subsidies to farmers to get more profit through cultivation in greenhouses.

Mr. Hanumantha Rao and Ms. Neeraja Prabhakar said from Israel that workshops would be held for farmers in Telangana for the adoption of Israeli-style vegetable cultivation with the help of greenhouses and the micro-irrigation.
